It probably goes without saying that the Amish community in Lancaster County is a major draw for visitors. As the oldest settlement of Amish people in the United States, tourists are fascinated by their slower, simple lifestyle. Amish farmsteads dot the countryside, and many Amish families have agri-businesses and cottage industries that the "English" (or non-Amish) are welcome to visit and patron. One such place is Misty Creek Goat Dairy in Leola, which is just 5 miles from the Inn and Spa at Intercourse Village.
Dairy owners Amos and Rebecca Miller are committed to producing high-quality goat milk products. Their herd of goats, including Alpines, Saanens and Lamanchas, are fed a diet of GMO-free grains and do not receive antibiotics or hormones to increase milk production. The goat milk is used to make a variety of hard and soft cheeses, caramels, yogurt, soaps and more. The family will happily show you the goats and tell you all about their farming operations.
Amos is the family's cheese-maker. The artisan cheeses he makes are aged anywhere from 60 days to a full year, which contributes to their unique flavor. Misty Creek has quite a selection – from milder cheese like Colby, Old World Muenster and Baby Swiss to more pungent cheese like Mist O' Bleu and Leacock Blue – not to mention classic and flavored Chevre. They also have several varieties of cheddar, including Smoked, Wine -n- Goat, and Garlic and Chive. The best part is you can enjoy free samples before you buy!
In addition to cheese, Misty Creek also sells raw goat milk, caramel and soap. Amos and Rebecca's two sons and their wives run the soap-making business. Each bar of soap starts with 1.5 ounces of goat milk and goes through a curing process before doubling in size. The bars are then hand packaged in muslin cloth to allow the soap to breathe. In scents like Luscious Lavender, Vanilla Oatmeal and Rosy Dream, these soaps will leave your skin feeling soft and healthy, and are perfect for those with sensitive skin. Liquid soaps are available in 4-ounce and 8-ounce bottles.
Misty Creek Goat Dairy products are sold at small retailers throughout Lancaster County, but there's nothing quite like visiting the farm yourself, meeting the Miller family, and seeing their fruits of their labor first-hand.
