A Reminder of the Importance of Tradition, Kindness and Joy of Christmas

For those looking for a truly memorable experience—and one that reflects the true spirit of the season—the live musical performance of The Christmas Tree Ship is a must-see. This heart-warming and inspirational musical is based on the true story of Herman Schuenemann, known as Captain Santa, who in November 1912 goes down with his ship in a storm on Lake Michigan while transporting Christmas trees to Chicago. His widow, Barbara, is left to raise their daughters, run the family shipping business and continue her husband’s mission of giving away thousands of Christmas trees to the less fortunate of Chicago. What Barbara Schuenemann and her daughter Elsie do to resurrect Captain Santa’s legacy is a true holiday miracle.

A talented cast of professionals performs this dramatic new musical in the intimate 140-seat Bird-in-Hand Stage theatre, known for Broadway-style musicals full of heart and purpose—perfect for family entertainment. The Christmas Tree Ship runs from October 28 to January 1, most Tuesdays through Saturdays, with varying showtimes (including matinees). Lunch and dinner show options are available. Guests who plan to enjoy some Amish country home cooking before the performance should arrive at least 90 minutes early. Stage doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime.
